DASO: El AfroCaribeño
His first performance was at Lincoln Center at age 8 with the cultural music and dance ensemble group founded by his mother, Angie Hernandez, ”El Grupo Cemi”.
From around the age of 13, David founded his own Hip-Hop Music dance group “The Body Rockers Empire”, and later, at 18, he became the singer for “A Band Called Loisaida” under the direction of guitarist, Edwin Pupa Santiago.
In 2005, David Soto began performing as “Daso” and created El Grupo Cemi once again as a music ensemble that is diverse in styles - fusing Salsa Tropical, Hip Hop and Reggae - which references his early influences of Afro Caribbean Rhythms, like Bomba and Musica Jibara.
He calls this eclectic mix of styles “Afro-Caribbean Soul” music.
Daso takes inspiration from his early memories and collaborations with legendary visionaries such as Bimbo Rivas, Tato Laviera, Miguel Piñero, Pupa Santiago, Chino Garcia & Armando Perez . Childhood inspirations were Nuyorican Poets Pedro Pietri, Jorge Brandon "El Coco Que Habla” & Miguel Algarin. These Legendary Nuyorican Poets, Musicians and Activists ignited his passion for cultural arts and community organizing.
In 2007, David Soto created the “New Village Music Festival” an annual multi-cultural concert that promote community activism through music, dance, poetry and cultural arts. His vision aspires to Unite people of all ages and ethnicities in raising awareness of the importance of peace within our communities and the significance of children's cultural arts programs toward this goal. Daso has also been blessed with the opportunity to organize educational, recreational, music and cultural arts programs for children and youth on the Lower East Side, South Bronx and surrounding communities, taking on the role as Community Coordinator for the New York City Housing Authority since 2005.
