The Jamie Begian Big Band
is a seventeen-piece big band, founded in 1998 to perform the original music of award-winning composer/conductor Jamie Begian. After its debut at El Taller on February 18, 1999, The Band went on to perform at such notable venues as The Knitting Factory and The Cutting Room in New York, and the 2003 International Association of Jazz Education Annual Conference in Toronto, Ontario.
In its five years of existence it has considerably honed its unique sound and is widely regarded as one of the most original bands in New York. The Village Voice has called it "some of the most gorgeous post-Gil hues in recent memory." TimeOut NY praises it as "a crack large ensemble" while All About Jazz labeled it "a rigorous encounter with the entire history of eclectic big band composition" The band is made up of some of the finest musicians in New York including John O'Gallagher (alto), Matt Shulman (trumpet), Roberta Piket (piano) and Deborah Weisz (trombone); all committed to both the power and delicacy that Mr. Begian's music demands.

The renowned Uruguayan singer and guitarist, Héctor "Numa" Moraes will delight us with his talent on September 10,
2004 starting at 8:00 PM. He will lead us through some of his extraordinarily varied repertoire, a voice of solidarity in songs with lyrics that challenge and denounce. Deeply rooted in the folkloric
music of the Uruguayan Northern lands, the lyrics represent some of the highest universal and contemporary poetry by many of the great Uruguayan and Latin American poets.
A virtuoso of the guitar and a well-recognized cantatour, Numa has shared stages all around the world with artists of the caliber of Alfredo Zitarrosa, Daniel Viglietti, Los Olimareños,
José Carvajal, Joan Manuel Serrat, Silvio Rodríguez, Pablo Milanés, Isabel y Angel Parra, Mercedes Sosa, Tania Libertad, Beto Caetano, Emma Junaro, Toñito Vargas,
Inti-Illimani and Quilapayún among many others.
Born in Curtina, Tacuarembó, Uruguay, Numa has developed the repertoire and experience playing his guitar of a truly exceptional level that he uses as a means of bringing us closer to the men
and women of the country's countryside, integrating us into the daily lives of its people. He was exiled during the military dictatorship in 1972 and his music was prohibited during 13 years by that
same regime. He continued his work to promote popular folk music in exile until his return, when together with several other well known exiled artists, in 1985, with "compañeros" from the
"canto popular" he shared the stage in a concert at the Franzini Stadium.
His activities continue to focus around teaching and dissemination efforts. He works in Montevideo at the National School of Dance - Folklore Division, under the auspices of the Ministry of
Culture.
This activity at the Taller is organized by the Comité por los Derechos Humanos en Uruguay (CDHU).

Rozanna's music was featured at the United Nations and Capital Hill, in the movie, Dancing With Kendra and the Knitting Factory. Her most recent
incarnation, Sweet Thunder, merges classical and popular culture seamlessly, redefining the role of the virtuoso. Rozanna just received an ASCAP Plus Award while her
music videos have been featured on the Classic Arts Showcase, the TRIO Network, Rhode Island International Film Festival, and Columbus IFF, where it
was a prize-winner. One critic exclaimed: a downright sensational violist while her performance at the International Viola Congress was described as ground
breaking. This season the violist also premiered a multi-textured work by Judith Shatin at the U. of Virginia.
Rozanna has performed extensively worldwide as soloist and chamber musician in Sweden, Israel, Canada, South Africa, Baltimore, Cleveland, Toronto, San
Francisco, Chicago, and Weill Recital Hall. She was selected to represent the US as an Artistic Ambassador by the USIA. Rozanna has recorded for North Pacific,
Mode and Albany Records and received her Bachelors degree from Peabody Conservatory of John Hopkins U. and Masters from The Juilliard School. Rozanna
has written many articles for Strings Magazine, has given a workshop at the United Nations and is currently a music consultant for the New York Pops.
