Jammin anyone? Written Jams by Carlos Cervantes

Legendary New York jazz percussionist Carlos Cervantes is announcing a concert series without knowing exactly whom he'll be playing with. "Jammin' Anyone" is an event for musicians, and music fans, who will learn their parts and then put on a show for the audience.

Guest artists will vary, but they will consistently be the best musicians that New York has to offer. Why are we so sure? Consider the following true story: Jack Jeffers and Enrique Fernandez were preparing the details of their own concert with their big band "New York Classics" when they heard what Carlos was going to play. They immediately jumped on the opportunity, forgetting for a moment their own show! "When is Carlos playing? Let me know! I used to go to his midnight concerts in the 80's! I'm coming when he plays!" The same has been said by many other musicians. Carlos is truly a musician's musician, called by one music critic "The most famous unknown musician in New York." His list of collaborators is surprising not only for the quantity, but also for the quality of names, including Luis Miguel, Lupita D'alessio and Jaco Pastorius.

Carlos Cervantes notes his that he has been influenced by Julian Carrillo, and he has incorporated some of the Mexican composers' styles into his own. Carlos Cervantes prefers to avoid definitions, but when pressed categorizes his own music as a form of spiritual jazz. Please join us at El Taller to enjoy the pleasure of seeing music not just performed, but truly being formed by some of the highest quality musicians in the city!

Fernando Otero was born in Buenos Aires, into a family of musicians. He received his first singing and piano lessons from his mother, Elsa Marval, a renowned opera singer and pianist. Since early childhood he has studied piano, harmony and composition which prepared him for his later master classes in orchestration and conducting with Domingo Marafiotti (resident conductor of the Symphonic Orchestra of the Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires). The inspiring environment of his upbringing allowed Otero to absorb diverse musical styles such as the traditional tango, local folklore, classical music, and Jazz.

Still in his student years, Otero started writing music for piano, choir, strings and brass quintets. However, his special interest in Argentine folklore led him to explore intensely the instruments which are characteristic for such music, like the bandoneon, guitar, charango, acordeon, and percussion. It was not long after that he started to incorporate the use of the bandoneon in most of his compositions. By combining elements of the popular music of his nation with improvisational jazz solos and classic piano cadenzas woven together by traditional as well as contemporary composition techniques, Fernando arrived at his own unique style. It is a style that generates moods and taps into the increasing appetite of sophisticated audiences for a new authentic sound.

It therefore comes as no surprise that his performance schedule has taken him to more than thirty countries and allowed him to excite audiences in some of the most prestigious venues like Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Town Hall and the Glenn Gould Studio.

Ricardo Cuevas

Saturday October 15
Concert starts at 8:30 pm.

Tickets: $10

Ricardo Cuevas Born and raised through high school in Chile, Ricardo Cuevas came to the U.S. on March of 1988. Music was probably the earliest artistic incentive he was exposed to. Both his parents sang in the choir of the University of Chile, where his mother also taught Voice Technique to choir members. His father was a folkloric researcher and performer. Ricardo's artistic birth was a need for self-expression in the new world he came to inhabit, and of which he new nothing, least of all the language. A self-taught guitar player and composer, Ricardo draws his inspiration from the conflicts and balance of daily live.

Grupo Miguelito

Friday October 21
Concert starts at 9:00 pm.

Tickets: $10

Miguelito Consisting of core members Richard Padron (guitar), Ze Luis Oliveira (horns and percussion) and Mychael "Miguelito" LaMorte (vocals/acoustic bass), Grupo Miguelito hits a mark somewhere between the bolero/flamenco stylings of mid 1970's Jose Feliciano and the modern energy of Manu Chau. The songs, some in Spanish and some in English, are rooted in a folkloric background with topics of devotion and struggle at the forefront, while others like "Sr. Marti" (a homage to famed Cuban poet Jose Marti), are festive as well as thought provoking.

And we can't forget the romance. Always a topic of classic songs, and ever-present in the themes of Grupo Miguelito's live shows and recordings. Stirring up a blend of instrumentation, with many talented friends at their disposal, Grupo Miguelito have been able to perform in intimate settings as well as in larger more lively venues by having a timeless repertoire of songs that translate with almost any combination of instruments as a backdrop for edgy tenor Miguelito. With a fusion of Bossa Nova, R&B, Salsa and Rock, Grupo Miguelito emote a sound that is uniquely their own.

Currently working on a self-titled EP (which includes collaborations with talented songwriters Victor Hernandez and Jaime Holguin) Grupo Miguelito continue to perform with some of New York City's finest musicians that include Mauro Refosco, Mike Williams, Bernardo Palombo, Mike McGinnis, Michelle Manzo, Claudia Chopek, Tom Aldrich, Jason Fratichelli, Marni Rice, and Joe McGinty.

Hector "Numa" Moraes

Friday October 28
Concert starts at 8:30 pm.

Tickets: $10

The renowned Uruguayan singer and guitarist, Héctor "Numa" Moraes will delight us again with his talent on Friday October 28, 2005 at EL TALLER starting at 8:30 PM. He will lead us through some of his extraordinarily varied repertoire, a voice of solidarity in songs with lyrics that challenge and denounce. Deeply rooted in the folkloric music of the Uruguayan Northern lands, the lyrics represent some of the highest universal and contemporary poetry by many of the great Uruguayan and Latin American poets.

A virtuoso of the guitar and a well-recognized cantatour, Numa has shared stages all around the world with artists of the caliber of Alfredo Zitarrosa, Daniel Viglietti, Los Olimareños, José Carvajal, Joan Manuel Serrat, Silvio Rodríguez, Pablo Milanés, Isabel y Angel Parra, Mercedes Sosa, Tania Libertad, Beto Caetano, Emma Junaro, Toñito Vargas, Inti-Illimani and Quilapayún among many others.

Born in Curtina, Tacuarembó, Uruguay, Numa has developed the repertoire and experience playing his guitar of a truly exceptional level that he uses as a means of bringing us closer to the people of the countryside, integrating us into the daily lives of its people. He was exiled during the military dictatorship in 1972 and his music was prohibited during 13 years by that same regime. He continued his work to promote popular folk music in exile until his return, when together with several other well known exiled artists, in 1985, with “compañeros” from the “canto popular” he shared the stage in a concert at the Franzini Stadium.

His activities continue to focus around teaching and dissemination efforts. He works in Montevideo at the National School of Dance – Folcloric Division, under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture.

This activity at the Taller is organized by the Grupo Uruguay.

Come join us to Benefit El Taller!

The musicians want to give back... El Taller's generosity and support throughout the summer and fall of our Jazz Argentino Series has helped these young artists to take flight with the original compositions of Julio Santillan, the incredible singing of Marta Gomez and the exquisite musicianship of the band led by virtuoso drummer of Franco Pinna. We can only say, DON'T MISS IT!

To describe the music of Los Changos Septet, you would have to learn different languages: The language of Tango and folkloric music of their native homeland and the language of jazz, that is evident in the new generations of composers. But I would dare to say, that not even understanding these worlds you would be able to describe the magic hidden behind this fine ensemble of musicians.

Maria Cangiano

Tuesday November 15
Concert starts at 9:30 pm.

Tickets: $10

Maria CangianoCalled by her many fans, "Anna Magnani with voice," Maria Cangiano, originally from Argentina, has a unique voice within Argentine a new generation of Tango singers in New York. Tango is much more than the lusty and sensuous dance familiar in the United States and around the world. Since the genre's birth among the lower classes of Buenos Aires at the turn of the 19th century, it comprised not only music and dance, but a rich lyric tradition. Tango songs portray humankind conflicts from gender issues, ethnic stereotypes, and class conflicts to the plain old heartache of love in all its forms. Trained as an opera singer, Maria Cangiano combines drama and singing in her interpretation of old and new Tango songs as "mini-operas" or melodramatic stories.

As the Brooklyn press said, "The depth and power of Maria Cangiano's woeful, soulful voice brings the nostalgic nature of the music to life." Her musicians -some of the best exponents of new tango in the United States- are two incredible international performers with a rich background in classical, jazz and tango music: Victor Prieto (accordion), called the "accordion genius" by The Daily News and Octavio Brunetti (piano), the winner of the New York Tango International Competition. The result is an original "global tango," that mixes traditional and avant-garde tango trends with the musicians' backgrounds and life experiences.

Interoceánico 3

Wednesday November 30
Event starts at 9:30 pm.

Tickets: $10

Interoceanico 3 Interoceánico means inter-oceanic. Interoceánico 3 is a unique blend of three musicians from Japan and Argentina. The group was formed in Boston in 2002 by composer and guitarist Hiroya Tsukamoto from Kyoto, Japan. They have performed many concerts throughout the Boston and New York areas including several appearances at The Berklee Performance Center (Boston, MA), Ryles Jazz Club (Cambridge, MA) and Satalla (New York, NY). They had successful tours to Japan (November 2004) and Korea/Japan (August 2005).

They are a musical ensemble different than most of their contemporaries. Interoceánico's music is a cornucopia of lush harmonies, lyrical melodies, driving rhythms and the first class arrangements that form their original music. They combine elements of South American folklore, contemporary fusion, jazz and pop music to create an overall sound that is appealing to both non-musicians and musicians. The architecture of their music is shaped by the variety of diverse influences and backgrounds that each members have.

La Balteuband

Sunday December 4
Concert starts at 8:00 pm.

La Balteuband La Balteuband is an instrumental ensemble lead by Emilio Teubal. His compositions are a balanced blend of jazz elements such as improvisation and of elements of Argentine music such as the lyricism of the tango and the richness of folk rhythms like chacarera and zamba. The music of La Balteuband weaves rhythmically and harmonically rich pre-composed structures with improvised sections that highlight the musicality of each member of the band. This is something that makes each performance of the group so fresh and special. As a composer, Mr. Teubal's influences range from some of the main Latin American composers of all times, like Astor Piazolla, Hermeto Pascual, and Egberto Gismonti, to the great masters of the jazz tradition, like Duke Ellington, Gil Evans, Charles Mingus. La Balteuband has performed in venues such as the Knitting Factory, 55 bar, nublu, and Galapagos arts space.
