Performing with X Tango Special Guest: Nicholas Danielson - Violin
Fernando Otero was born in Buenos Aires, into a family of musicians. He received his first singing and piano lessons from his mother, Elsa Marval, a renowned opera singer and pianist. Since
early childhood he has studied piano, harmony and composition which prepared him for his later master classes in orchestration and conducting with Domingo Marafiotti (resident conductor of the
Symphonic Orchestra of the Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires). The inspiring environment of his upbringing allowed Otero to absorb diverse musical styles such as the traditional tango, local folklore,
classical music, and Jazz.
Still in his student years, Otero started writing music for piano, choir, strings and brass quintets. However, his special interest in Argentine folklore led him to explore intensely the instruments
which are characteristic for such music, like the bandoneon, guitar, charango, acordeon, and percussion. It was not long after that he started to incorporate the use of the bandoneon in most of his
compositions. By combining elements of the popular music of his nation with improvisational jazz solos and classic piano cadenzas woven together by traditional as well as contemporary composition
techniques, Fernando arrived at his own unique style. It is a style that generates moods and taps into the increasing appetite of sophisticated audiences for a new authentic sound.
It therefore comes as no surprise that his performance schedule has taken him to more than thirty countries and allowed him to excite audiences in some of the most prestigious venues like Carnegie
Hall, Lincoln Center, Town Hall and the Glenn Gould Studio.

Gyil, prounounced JEE-lee, the grandmother of the keyboard family, is the national instrument of the Dagara and
Lobi nations of Ghana in West Africa. People believe that its sound comes from a water vibration that balances
the water in the body - a catalyst for deep emotional and spititual healing. The gyil maestro studies the
instrument for much of his life before he is considered worthy to represent the community.
Bernard Woma was the solo gyil player and lead master drummer with the National Dance Ensemble of Ghana,
with whom he has travelled the world. First woman to be allowed to play gyil publicly, Valerie Naranjo
has performed as a soloist on six continents and plays percussion and arranges for NBC's Saturday Night Live
Band and Broadway's "The Lion King”. She was named "World Percussionist of the Year" by Drum! magazine this
year. Barry Olsen has performed with almost all the major artists in the New York Afro-Cuban dance
scene, including Ray Barretto, Eddie Palmieri, Hector Lavoe, Tito Puente, Celia Cruz, Marc Anthony, and
La India. He is returning from a tour of four East African countries to play this concert.
The three of them met in 1996 and began performing in 1997. They have released one CD: Zie Mwea
(Natural Conditions) as a documentation of their efforts.

Singer/songwriter and guitarist Rubén González presents his CD "Foto de mi aldea" which is a collection of his latest compositions and collaborations. He will perform with his band featuring Michael "Dinosaur" Campbell on guitar and Gerardo Flores on percussion.
With songs about Mother Earth, alcoholism and pixilated love on the Internet, among others, Rubén's performance is an excellent opportunity to taste original music with Spanish words in an intimate and rhythmic environment.
Rubén's lyrics touch upon social issues and current events as well as personal and relationship experiences. In his music, Rock en Español, bossa nova, and the Latin American popular song share space with his own rhythmic style with novel harmonies.

JUAN FALU, ARGENTINA'S LEADING MASTER GUITARIST
A must for lovers of guitar music, this is a one night only appearance by one of South America's most distinguished guitarists and composers.
A vital force in Argentinean music, and part of the acclaimed Falú family, Juan Falú is considered to be one of today's most important Argentinean musicians. Despite his Folk and Tango image, he has performed and recorded with international artists in an array of musical genres that includes the quintessential folk singer Mercedes Sosa and acclaimed rock artist Fito Páez.
Juan Falú remains at the core of his musical community, where he directs the Guitars of the World Festival, considered the largest international event in its genre. He also teaches in the Manuel de Falla Conservatory, in Buenos Aires, where he has created the first curricula for Folklore and Tango.
A delightfully lyrical performer, Falú's music for guitar recreates the freshness and inventiveness of Argentinean folk rhythms, and many of his pieces are firmly established in the repertoire of the most outstanding Argentinean musicians.
Tickets are $20.00 and can be purchased in advance by calling El Taller 212-665-9460.

LOS CHANGOS SEPTET
"Santillán and company have found a way to weave together startling tapestries
of color that splash both surprise and warm feelings everywhere as they move a
cultural fusion into the future." - Boston Herald
To describe the music of Los Changos Septet, you would have to learn different languages: the language of tango and folkloric music of their native homeland and the language of jazz, that is evident in the new generations of composers. But I would dare to say, that not even understanding these worlds you would be able to describe the magic hidden behind this fine ensemble of musicians.
Featuring:
Julio A. Santillán - guitar/composition
Franco Pinna - drums
Moto Fukushima - bass
Marta Gómez - voice
Yulia Musayelyan - flute
Nuno Antunes - clarinet
Laura Arpiainen - violin

La Balteuband is an instrumental ensemble lead by Emilio Teubal. His compositions are a balanced blend of jazz elements such as improvisation and of elements of Argentine music such as the lyricism of the tango and the richness of folk rhythms like chacarera and zamba. The music of La Balteuband weaves rhythmically and harmonically rich pre-composed structures with improvised sections that highlight the musicality of each member of the band. This is something that makes each performance of the group so fresh and special. As a composer, Mr. Teubal's influences range from some of the main Latin American composers of all times, like Astor Piazolla, Hermeto Pascual, and Egberto Gismonti, to the great masters of the jazz tradition, like Duke Ellington, Gil Evans, Charles Mingus. Sativasur was created in the Fall of 2005 with the intent of exploring the rich traditions
of Colombian folk music within the context of improvisation. The diversity of its members'
interests and backgrounds produces a rich variety of elements - ranging from folk melodies
and rhythms to free jazz - that combine to create a unique and fresh sound. The group
performs its original music, thereby contributing its progressive sound to Colombian
music. However, even in its more intensely abstract moments, Sativasur's music is
always grounded in the folkloric roots of Colombia’s vast musical tapestry.
Sativasur has performed at La Terraza Café in Queens; Exit Art gallery; Satalla; Makor
on 67th Street; and for the Music for Peace Festival at Stonybrook University. The group
will record its first album this year for Chonta Records.
