>Spanish for Legal Professionals & Students
CUNY School of Continuing Education
6 Mondays, 6 to 8pm, $240
Mar 13 - Apr 24, 2006 No class April 3
One of the greatest challenges for legal professionals in New York is the need to communicate in Spanish with peoples from many different countries, each of which has its own legal terminology in Spanish. For example, if you want to discuss an "eviction notice" in New York, it is customary for a native speaker of Spanish raised in New York to refer to it in English, whereas an immigrant from, say, Argentina would refer to it in Spanish as "un orden de desalojo." Therefore, one goal of this course is to practice communicating legal concepts using common language in addition to legal terminology.
Taught in Spanish, the class will cover a broad mix of practical legal terminology, vocabulary and conversational skills. In addition we will touch on how to incorporate legal terms and processes that are best communicated in English (because of the country to country differences) rather than in Spanish.

Enormous cultural and language variations exist even among countries that share a national language. In much of Latin America, for example, "constipado" means constipated, while in Spain it indicates a chest cold. Such regional variations pose a considerable challenge to healthcare professionals in particular.
This course, taught in Spanish, is designed especially for doctors, nurses, and other health care professionals; it will cover a broad range of practical medical terminology and vocabulary and will examine cultural and language differences that health professionals are likely to encounter in their interactions with patients from different countries in Latin America.
