El Taller Latino Americano
¡Jazz Argentino!

Wednesday nights
Back by Popular Demand- October 2005!

Two sets 9:30 pm & 11 pm

A few years ago in New York City, a group of Argentinean musicians started a movement to create a new sound in jazz incorporating tango from Buenos Aires and Folkloric music from the countryside of Argentina. This concept began with pre-eminent tango composer Astor Piazzola and later it was developed by new generations of Argentinean composers and performers all over the world.

Through the "Argentinean night" at El Taller Latino Americano our goal is to consolidate the concept of Argentinean jazz and expand it to musicians from all origins. Los Changos are pleased to invite young musicians from South America, Africa, Japan and the US to bring their cultural background and play Argentinean rhythms.

LA BALTEUBAND / LOS CHANGOS SEPTET

9:30 pm:   Los Changos Septet

La Balteuband is an instrumental ensemble lead by Emilio Teubal. His compositions are a balanced blend of jazz elements such as improvisation and elements of Argentine music such as the lyricism of the tango and the richness of folk rhythms like chacarera and zamba. The music of La Balteuband weaves rhythmically and harmonically rich pre-composed structures with improvised sections that highlight the musicality of each member of the band. This is something that makes each performance of the group so fresh and special. As a composer, Mr. Teubal's influences range from some of the main Latin American composers of all times, like Astor Piazolla, Hermeto Pascual, and Egberto Gismonti, to the great masters of the jazz tradition, like Duke Ellington, Gil Evans, Charles Mingus. La Balteuband has performed in venues such as the Knitting Factory, 55 bar, nublu, and Galapagos arts space.

FERNANDO OTERO / X TANGO SPECIAL GUEST

Sets 9:30 pm & 11 pm.

Performing with X Tango Special Guest: Nicholas Danielson - Violin

Fernando Otero was born in Buenos Aires, into a family of musicians. He received his first singing and piano lessons from his mother, Elsa Marval, a renowned opera singer and pianist. Since early childhood he has studied piano, harmony and composition which prepared him for his later master classes in orchestration and conducting with Domingo Marafiotti (resident conductor of the Symphonic Orchestra of the Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires). The inspiring environment of his upbringing allowed Otero to absorb diverse musical styles such as the traditional tango, local folklore, classical music, and Jazz.

Still in his student years, Otero started writing music for piano, choir, strings and brass quintets. However, his special interest in Argentine folklore led him to explore intensely the instruments which are characteristic for such music, like the bandoneon, guitar, charango, acordeon, and percussion. It was not long after that he started to incorporate the use of the bandoneon in most of his compositions. By combining elements of the popular music of his nation with improvisational jazz solos and classic piano cadenzas woven together by traditional as well as contemporary composition techniques, Fernando arrived at his own unique style. It is a style that generates moods and taps into the increasing appetite of sophisticated audiences for a new authentic sound.

It therefore comes as no surprise that his performance schedule has taken him to more than thirty countries and allowed him to excite audiences in some of the most prestigious venues like Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Town Hall and the Glenn Gould Studio.
