El Taller Latino Americano
Becky Bliss
Recently introduced as "La Cubana en Nueva York" at a dance festival in Italy, Becky received her initial training in Modern and Classical dance at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center. Her first trip to Cuba in '99 felt like coming home, and was the beginning of an exploration and appreciation of the Cuban dance experience that will last a life-time. She has returned three times for extensive periods of study, and has had the honor of knowing and studying with some of the greatest living teachers of Cuban Popular, Folkloric, and Contemporary Dance -- including professors from Ballet Folklorico Cutumba, Los Munequitos de Matanzas, Grupo Afro-Cuba, Danza Contemporanea, Ban Rra Rra, and professors in the national college for the arts in Havana.

In addition to her Adult and Youth Salsa classes, she currently teaches Caribbean,Contemporary, and African dance in two New York public high schools. Both her choreography and her teaching are an evolving vision based on the same foundation -- that dance belongs to everyone and to no one, that knowledge is for sharing, and that the most profound expression of dance (and life) is in simplicity. She has come to realize that "Cuban" is a state of mind and an experience of the heart that needs to be shared and nurtured like all things timeless.
