“A Beautiful Multicultural Voice”: a review by international writer Cesar Chelala

I have just finished listening to an excellent new singer, Timna Comedi. In an appropriately called “Concert en casa” she sings from her home a medley of songs, almost all of them written by her, with one exception, a song by the noted Argentine singer and composer Bernardo Palombo. In her songs Timna sings about the nefarious effects of the pandemic, and in a Bossa Nova song she sings about how these times are good to go out of ourselves and learn how to love again. In her song “Crying Lady”, composed while she was traveling from Jerusalem to Tel Aviv, Timna describes her sense of sadness and hopelessness that is relieved by a beautiful friendship. Her multicultural background (she has lived in Brazil, Argentina, Israel and the US) she sings with equal proficiency in four different languages. In her song “Babu”, she sings with love to one of her grandmothers (“I have two grandmothers, and both of them are extraordinary women”, she says) who is living in Paraguay and after a big personal loss is finding new horizons in her life. In “Pedazos de mi” she sings about the struggle to find her own self. Timna renders homage to Palombo for helping her find her talent for painting and teaching her how to play and teach children. She sings Palombo’s song “Cuida el agua” which should be part of every effort to teach people how to conserve and care for this unique resource. In her song “Menino pega esse violᾶo” Timna encourages a friend to learn how to play the guitar to bring happiness to people, something that we need now more than ever.
